Apple Dictation vs AI dictation apps on Mac
Disclosure: SwitchDesk is our app, and it’s one of the options below. It does dictation, meeting notes, screen videos and your to-do list, in one Mac app.
You said: “hi joe um quick one before we start could you like bring the the support team's headcount numbers”. It typed: “Hi Joe, quick one before we start: could you bring the support team's headcount numbers?”.
Every Mac can already type what you say. Below: what Apple Dictation does, what AI apps add, what each sends off your Mac, and a five-minute test. Apple’s details come from its own guide, read Oct 5, 2026.
What Apple Dictation does
Turn it on in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. Then press the Microphone key, if your keyboard has one, or press fn twice. Talk, and the words appear anywhere you can type.
- No time limit. Apple says you can dictate text of any length. Dictation stops by itself after 30 seconds without speech, or when you press Escape or the shortcut again.
- Punctuation for you. In supported languages it adds commas, periods and question marks as you talk. You can also say “new line”, “new paragraph”, punctuation names and emoji names.
- On your Mac, where it can. Keyboard settings tell you whether your dictation is processed on your device rather than sent to Apple’s servers. Which languages are available varies by region.
It costs nothing extra and it’s good at its job: getting your words down.
Where it stops
Apple Dictation types what you said, the way you said it. Apple’s guide covers punctuation and spoken commands; it doesn’t describe removing filler words or acting on self-corrections. So “um”, a doubled “the” and “Friday, no wait, Thursday” all reach the page, and you fix them by hand. It also writes the same way in Terminal as it does in Messages.
What AI dictation apps add
An AI dictation app transcribes your speech, then runs the text through a language model before pasting it. The useful part is what that pass removes, as in Fig. 1.
- Cleanup. Fillers, repeated words and false starts go. After “never mind” or “no wait”, only the corrected version stays. Spoken numbers become digits.
- Styles per app. Exact in a terminal, casual in a chat, tidy in an email.
- Your words. A list of names and terms the app should spell your way.
- Commands. Some apps act on what you say, not only type it.
The trade-offs: most charge a subscription, and a few sell a one-time license. Many send your audio to a server to transcribe it, though some can run on your Mac. And language support varies a lot.

Three AI dictation apps, briefly
As of Oct 5, 2026, from each app’s own pages:
Wispr Flow
Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, with 100+ languages. The free plan allows 2,000 words a week on desktop; Pro is $12 per user a month billed yearly ($15 monthly). Its plans also include a notetaker for calls, on Mac and Windows. SwitchDesk vs Wispr Flow →
Superwhisper
Works offline with local models, supports 100+ languages and dialects, and can translate them into English. There’s a free plan, 3,000 words to try Pro, and a Lifetime plan you pay for once. SwitchDesk vs Superwhisper →
How SwitchDesk does it
SwitchDesk
Hold Globe, talk, let go: the tidy version lands where your cursor is. “AI Polish” does the cleanup, and “App-aware modes” keep Terminal exact and Messages casual. A sentence that starts with “add a todo” isn’t typed at all: “add a todo prep pricing slides for Thursday” lands under Fernhill. Dictation is unlimited on both plans, from $12/mo billed yearly ($15 monthly).
AI Polish
Auto-punctuation, grammar fixes, bullet & numbered lists from spoken cues. Off → raw transcript with dictionary substitutions only.
What leaves your Mac
This is the question to ask any dictation app, because the answers differ more than the features do.
- Apple Dictation: Keyboard settings say whether your dictation is processed on your Mac. Where it is, your voice doesn’t go to Apple’s servers.
- Cloud AI apps: your voice is sent to a speech service to be transcribed, and the text is usually sent to a language model for the cleanup. Read each app’s privacy page for who that is.
- Local AI apps: apps that run a model on your Mac, like Superwhisper with its local models, can work with no connection at all.
- SwitchDesk: your voice streams to our transcription provider while you talk. With “AI Polish” on, the text, not the audio, goes through our server to an AI model to be tidied. Your recent dictations stay on your Mac for the menu-bar history.
How to choose in five minutes
Write down one messy sentence you’d really say.
Or borrow Fig. 1’s: “hi joe um quick one before we start could you like bring the the support team's headcount numbers”. Fillers and a repeated word are the test; add a correction (“Friday, no wait, Thursday”) if you make them.
Say it into Apple Dictation.
Open Notes, press the Microphone key (or fn twice), and say the sentence at your normal speed.
Say it into the AI app you’re trying.
Same sentence, same app, same speed. Most AI dictation apps have a free tier or a trial.
Pick the one you’d send without editing.
Then check the boring parts: the price, which languages it understands, and what it sends off your Mac.
If you dictate a line or two a day, Apple Dictation is hard to beat: it’s already there. If you write messages, notes and to-dos by voice all day, the cleanup saves the edits you’d otherwise make by hand.
