MCP server and tool reference

Connect any MCP client to a SwitchDesk to-do list: two endpoints, key vs OAuth sign-in, client configs, and all 30 tools with arguments and permissions.

This page as Markdown · All docs as one file · Generated from the API and CLI source, checked 2026-10-21

Endpoints

EndpointAuthFor
https://api.switchdesk.org/mcpAuthorization: Bearer sda_…Clients that send a header: Grok team bots, Muse, scripts, editors, the switchdesk mcp bridge
https://mcp.switchdesk.org/mcpOAuth 2.1 (see OAuth)Clients that sign in: ChatGPT, Claude, grok.com, Gemini

Transport: Streamable HTTP, stateless (no session id). Both the 2026-07-28 revision and the 2025 initialize handshake work. GET answers 405. Requests from a browser (with an Origin header) are refused. Results carry structuredContent and the same JSON as text; every tool is annotated (readOnlyHint, destructiveHint, idempotentHint, openWorldHint: false).

Connect a client

Claude Code (through the CLI, the key stays in the Keychain):

npm install -g switchdesk
switchdesk login
claude mcp add switchdesk -- switchdesk mcp

Cursor or Claude Desktop (mcp.json: ~/.cursor/mcp.json, or ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "switchdesk": {
      "command": "switchdesk",
      "args": ["mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Any client that sends a header (the setup page’s “Without the CLI” shows the same):

# Save the key in your Keychain once (paste it when asked):
security add-generic-password -a "$USER" -s switchdesk -w
export SWITCHDESK_TOKEN="$(security find-generic-password -a "$USER" -s switchdesk -w)"

claude mcp add --transport http switchdesk https://api.switchdesk.org/mcp --header 'Authorization: Bearer ${SWITCHDESK_TOKEN}'

Apps that sign in: add https://mcp.switchdesk.org/mcp as a custom connector and sign in with the SwitchDesk email. Steps per app: ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Gemini.

Raw JSON-RPC (one POST per message):

curl -s https://api.switchdesk.org/mcp \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SWITCHDESK_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" -H "Accept: application/json, text/event-stream" \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/call","params":{"name":"get_access","arguments":{}}}'

get_access: What this connection may do

What this connection is allowed to do: each capability's mode (off, ask or on), which ones are coming soon, and the plan status. Call it first.

  • Permission: none
  • Kind: read-only
  • REST: POST /v1/get_access (or GET /v1/get_access with query parameters)

No arguments.

{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/call","params":{"name":"get_access","arguments":{}}}

list_categories: List categories

The person's categories with their bios (what each category is for), colour, whether teammates can see it, and how many open to-dos it holds. "Today's Todo" and "This Week" are built-in planning sections.

  • Permission: categories.read
  • Kind: read-only
  • REST: POST /v1/list_categories (or GET /v1/list_categories with query parameters)

No arguments.

{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/call","params":{"name":"list_categories","arguments":{}}}

list_todos: List to-dos

The person's to-dos, open ones by default, in their list order. Filter by section or category; search titles and notes with query. Pages of up to 100: pass next_cursor back as cursor.

  • Permission: todos.read
  • Kind: read-only
  • REST: POST /v1/list_todos (or GET /v1/list_todos with query parameters)
ArgumentTypeRequiredNotes
sectionstringone of incoming, today, this_week, category, uncategorized, assigned, done
categorystring0–200 characters; Exact category name (case-insensitive). 0 or several matches is an error.
category_idstring (uuid)
statestringone of open, done, all; default "open"
backlogboolean
due_beforestring (date)
querystring0–200 characters; Searches titles and notes. REST: send it in a POST body, never in a URL.
include_notesbooleanInclude each to-do's Notes box (up to 2000 characters each).

get_todo: Get one to-do

One to-do with its full notes, sub-to-dos, blockers, summary and progress note.

  • Permission: todos.read
  • Kind: read-only
  • REST: POST /v1/get_todo (or GET /v1/get_todo with query parameters)
ArgumentTypeRequiredNotes
idstring (uuid)yes

add_todo: Add a to-do

Adds a to-do at the bottom of Incoming (no category), a category, Today (section today) or This Week (section this_week, optional day 1-7 = Monday-Sunday), or under a parent to-do (parent_id). With section today/this_week, category names the to-do's home category. next_week tags it in its category for next week. due (YYYY-MM-DD) follows the person's date rules; repeat (RRULE or rule object) sets the first date itself. If adding to a category is off but adding to Incoming is on, it goes to Incoming tagged with that category. In Ask mode it becomes an approval card instead (status pending_approval).

  • Permission: todos.add_incoming / todos.add

parent_idstring or null (uuid)Add it as a sub-to-do of this main to-do (title, notes, urgent and estimate only).
idempotency_keystring1–100 characters; Optional. Re-sending the same key within 24 h returns the first answer instead of acting twice.
{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/call","params":{"name":"add_todo","arguments":{"title":"Example"}}}

update_todo: Edit a to-do

Changes only the fields you send: title, notes (replace) or notes_append, section (today, this_week, category with category/category_id, uncategorized) and day, next_week, due (date or null), repeat (rule, or null to stop), urgent, blocked, backlog, estimate_minutes, priority (1-10), progress_note, parent_id (a main to-do's id to nest it, null to make it a main to-do). set_todo_state: Check off, start or reopen

Sets up to 50 to-dos to done, in_progress or open. Per-id results. A repeating to-do's next copy appears once a SwitchDesk app syncs. In Ask mode it becomes an approval card.

Sends up to 25 changes (add_todo, update_todo, set_todo_state, delete_todos, add_todo_note, delete_todo_note, create_category, update_category, create_note, append_to_note, update_note, delete_note) as ONE approval card; the person approves all or denies all. Built partly from what the person dictated. date (YYYY-MM-DD) picks the period containing it; default today. Recaps are made only when the person opens Recap, never on request; may_be_stale says the period wasn't over yet.

search_brain: Search the person's Brain

Searches the person's SwitchDesk Brain (what they told it to remember, their meeting notes, Notes, recaps, finished to-dos and websites they asked it to learn) by meaning and keywords, in the spaces they let connected AIs read. Returns cited snippets (ref B1, B2…, kind, title, date, space, text, source_id, url, page_id) and the people, companies, projects and topics the question names, with ids for get_brain_page. space narrows it to one space (a name or id from get_access). • REST: POST /v1/search_brain
ArgumentTypeRequiredNotes

One Brain page by id (from search_brain): a person, company, project or topic (name, one-line summary, the page, current facts newest first with the ones they replaced under previously, and the sources behind it), or a context page the Brain wrote from a website. A page partly built from spaces this connection can't read shows only the facts and sources it may read.

  • Permission: brain.read
